What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Stay calm and call us at (213) 731-2210. Our Los Angeles team sets aside time each day for emergencies. We'll ask about your symptoms, explain first-aid steps over the phone, and offer the earliest available appointment, often the same day when possible.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or neck, bleeding that won't stop with firm pressure, or a possible broken jaw or head injury. These situations need emergency medical care first.

  • Call first so we can prepare for your visit
  • Bring any tooth pieces, a lost crown, or broken appliance parts
  • Bring a list of the medications you take
  • Don't place aspirin or other tablets directly on your gums
  • Your dentist will explain treatment options before starting

First Aid for Common Dental Emergencies

These general steps can help until you're seen. They don't replace an exam, so call our office after taking them.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food. A cold compress on the cheek may help while you call us.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly if dirty, keep it moist in milk, and get care right away.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress for swelling. Call us so the tooth can be checked.

Lost Crown or Filling

Keep the crown in a small container and avoid chewing on that side. Don't use household glue; call to schedule a visit.

Dental Abscess or Swelling

Call us promptly and rinse gently with warm salt water. If swelling spreads or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the ER.

Dental Bleeding or Trauma

Press clean gauze firmly on the area for 10–15 minutes. If bleeding won't stop or you hurt your jaw or head, seek emergency care.

Same-Day Scheduling

We hold time each day for urgent problems. Call when we're open and we'll offer the earliest available visit, same day when possible.

Finding the Cause

At your visit, digital X-rays and, when needed, 3D cone beam CT imaging help the dentist see what is causing the problem.

Broken Braces Wire or Bracket

Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax or a cotton ball, and call before trying to cut it. Save any loose brackets and bring them in.

Same-Day Crowns

If a broken tooth needs a crown, CEREC may allow it to be designed, milled, and placed in the same visit, depending on the tooth.

At your visit, the dentist will examine the area, take X-rays if needed, and explain your treatment options before starting.

Many people can use an over-the-counter pain reliever taken as directed on the label, if it is safe for them. Check with your physician or pharmacist if you have health conditions or take other medications. Never place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gums, as this can irritate the tissue.
