When a tooth can't be saved, removing it carefully is the first step toward a healthier mouth. Our Los Angeles team keeps you comfortable and helps you plan what comes next.
WHEN EXTRACTION IS NEEDED
Your dentist will look for ways to keep a natural tooth first, such as a filling, crown, or root canal. Extraction is usually recommended only when a tooth is too damaged, infected, or loose to restore predictably, or when removing it will protect the teeth around it.
Before your appointment, we'll talk about how the space can be filled afterward with an implant, a bridge, or partial dentures, so your bite and smile stay balanced.
TYPES OF EXTRACTIONS
The approach depends on whether the tooth is visible above the gums, how its roots are shaped, and its overall condition. Both are done with local anesthesia so the area is numb.
For a tooth that has fully come in and can be seen above the gumline. The tooth is gently loosened and lifted out, often in a short visit and frequently without the need for stitches.
For a tooth that has broken at the gumline, hasn't fully erupted, or has curved or fragile roots. A small opening in the gum gives access, and the tooth may be removed in sections to protect the surrounding bone.
If a tooth is causing severe pain or an infection, call us. We reserve time each day for emergencies and offer same-day appointments when possible.
Sometimes teeth are removed to make room for alignment before braces or Invisalign. With general dentistry and orthodontics in one office, timing is coordinated with your orthodontic plan.
RECOVERY & AFTERCARE
Most people feel noticeably better within a few days, though healing time varies with the tooth and the type of extraction. The main goal early on is to protect the blood clot that forms in the socket. If it's disturbed too soon, a painful condition called dry socket can develop.
You'll go home with written instructions, and we'll talk about replacement options at a follow-up visit once the area has started to heal.
WHY CHOOSE US
From numbing to aftercare, every step is explained before it happens, so you always know what to expect.
The area is thoroughly numbed before we begin. You may feel pressure, but you shouldn't feel sharp pain, and you can ask for a break at any time.
We reserve time daily for urgent problems and offer same-day emergency appointments when possible. Call the office if you're in pain.
Removing a tooth is rarely the end of the story. We'll go over implants, bridges, and partials so you can choose a replacement that fits.
If dental visits make you nervous, laughing gas can help you feel more relaxed while you stay awake and able to respond.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Straight answers about extraction comfort, healing, dry socket, and replacing a missing tooth.
You shouldn't feel sharp pain. Local anesthesia numbs the tooth and surrounding gum, so most patients notice only pressure and movement. Nitrous oxide is also available if you'd like help relaxing.
Many patients feel much better within a few days. The gum tissue typically closes over in one to two weeks, while the bone underneath continues to fill in for several months. Healing varies by patient and by how complex the extraction was.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket breaks down or is dislodged too early, exposing the bone underneath. To lower the risk, avoid smoking, drinking through straws, and forceful rinsing or spitting for the first few days. If pain gets worse a few days after your extraction instead of better, call our office.
In most cases, it's worth considering. A gap can allow nearby teeth to shift and the bone in that area to shrink over time. Options include a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture, and your dentist can help you weigh them.
Stick with soft, cool, or lukewarm foods at first, such as yogurt, soup that has cooled, or mashed potatoes. Chew on the opposite side, and avoid crunchy, hard, or very hot foods until your dentist says the area has healed enough.
Many PPO dental plans include coverage for extractions, though benefits vary by plan. Our team can verify your coverage and file claims for you. Please note that we do not accept Denti-Cal or Medi-Cal.
